Growing up, I always knew that I wanted to work in healthcare. After I graduated college in 2019, I knew I still wanted to work in healthcare, but I still wasn’t sure of exactly what I wanted to do. I took a job working as a receptionist in an OB/GYN office and that is where I discovered my passion for women’s health and obstetrics. I loved the environment, I loved the science and medicine behind it, and I knew this is where I wanted to be. However, I was not satisfied with the non-clinical work; I wanted to be in the action and have a more patient centered role. I eventually decided to go back to school to get my nursing degree, with the intention that I will someday be working as a labor and delivery nurse. I am about to start a new part time job as a CNA in a NICU, so I am hoping this experience will also deepen my desire to have a women’s health/obstetrics focused career as a nurse.
During the accelerated bachelor’s in science of nursing program, I am mostly excited for the coursework for fetal and maternal nursing. I am hoping this course will provide me with a knowledge base that will allow me to become successful in my future career. I am interested in the labor and delivery process and what we will be learning about in regards to it in the semesters coming up.
I have not heard the term “evidence based practice” until starting this program. My assumptions regarding this course and the information we will learn in it are that we will learn about the nursing process based on research and developmental procedures conducted by nurses. I will be able to apply the concepts learned in this course to my other course work and during my clinical rotations. I think it is important to learn from the situations that you encounter not only in the classroom, but also when you are in the clinical environment. You can learn from your own mistakes, your own experiences, or from other nurses’/providers’ experiences. I hope that this course will allow me to develop a good base for learning concepts and applying them to my future career as a nurse.
